We are Taking Small Steps to Make Earth Better Planet
Since 2008, there is a growing number of Central African refugees and immigrants resettling in Arizona. This transition adds many other challenges to the trauma some of them have already endured. Unfortunately, there is a lack of trained Pastors and lay leaders to effectively minister to them. Since 2010, Pastor, Dr. Joel Mpabwanimana assisted by the Glendale Church leadership, organized a small group of five families of refugees from central Africa. The small group became a group mission, then an organized company and now an organized church. As a result of this, there are several primary objectives: (1) to acknowledge African refugees and immigrants’ presence in Phoenix, Arizona, and to provide ways for them to grow spiritually; (2) to promote and practice effective leadership because of mission-driven service training; and (3) to increase awareness of the importance of communication and relationship issues in areas such as alphabetization, family of origin, and worship. While initiating this work, the goal of the Ubumwe Seventh-day Adventist Church is to be a church model that can be replicated more broadly. To achieve this goal, our mission demands diligent preparation in biblical and theological reflection, and across-cultural competency. Finaly, the Ubumwe church is a community that God calls to lead and serve with compassionate hearts, giving of ourselves to portray the unconditional love of Christ.
